Hinoki Bark Roof Restoration @ Shofuso Japanese House and Garden | Philadelphia | Pennsylvania | United States
Get a first-hand look at Japanese architecture as we restore Shofuso’s roof. Our roof is made of hinoki, a Japanese cypress, and is the only one of its kind in the United States. The care and upkeep of a hinoki bark roof demands precision and knowledge of traditional roofing techniques. Only 100 people know how to work with the materials, and all are based in Japan.
This October, Tanigami Roofing Co. LLC, a Japanese roof restoration company, will come to Shofuso and restore part of the roof, preserving it for an additional 15 or more years beyond its predicted life.
From October 11 to October 22, take a guided tour and learn more about roof restoration and Japanese architecture through an exhibition of carpentry tools. For an additional fee of $20 ($10 JASGP members), visitors may take a tour on a scaffold ramp to the roof at 12pm and 3pm during regular admission hours. Executive Director Kim Andrews and members of Shofuso’s board will offer detailed tours for up to eight guests. Tickets may be purchased online or in person.
