Lecture and Book Signing: Pride of Place: The History of Japanese Gardens in Philadelphia and North America @ Shofuso Japanese House and Garden | Philadelphia | Pennsylvania | United States

Come and watch the sunset with us as Dr. Kendall Brown, the author of Quiet Beauty: The Gardens of North America featuring Shofuso, talks on the history of Japanese gardens in Philadelphia and signs copies of his beautiful photography book.

Dr. Brown will speak on “Pride of Place: The History of Japanese Gardens in Philadelphia and North America”, as well as survey his photographic art book, Quiet Beauty: The Japanese Gardens of North America, analyzing how its discussion of Japanese-style gardens fits the rich evidence provided by Japanese gardens in the Philadelphia area. This discussion will cover the history of Shofuso’s site beginning with the Centennial Exhibition. Dr. Brown will sign copies of his book, which features Shofuso on the cover.

Kendall Brown is Professor of Asian Art History in the Art Department at California State University Long Beach. He also recently served as Curator of Collections, Exhibitions and Programs at Pacific Asia Museum. Dr. Brown is a leading figure in the study of Japanese gardens in North America and is the author of Japanese-style Gardens of the Pacific West Coast.
